The Nittany Lions enter the tourney with their highest seed in program history at the 6th spot. 2009 Big Ten Coach of the Year Ed DeChellis has brought a new found excitement to the University and he hopes to solidify PSU’s spot in next week’s Big Dance with a win over 11th seeded Indiana University (6-24, 1-17 Big Ten). Led by 1st team All-Big Ten guard Talor Battle, this squad will look to jump out early on an Indiana team that has only one win since December. Battle and 2nd team All-Big Ten forward Jamelle Cornley will try to quiet the Bloomington, Indiana crowd and prevent them from chanting their infamous line, “Hoooo-sier Daaadd-dy?” <br /><br />After wins this season against four ranked opponents, the Nittany Lions are playing with an inspiring swagger, one that had been missing over the past decade. Regardless of how they do in their conference tournament the 21-10 (10-8 in conference) Lions should have a resume worthy of receiving an at large bid to the NCAA tournament. There is no way the committee can leave them out, not with road wins against then #6 Michigan State and at a ranked Illinois. Tomorrow at 5pm on ESPN2 this young squad, who sports over a half dozen underclassmen in their rotation, will prove that they are for real and that the football team won’t be the only players feeling rosy in Happy Valley.<br /><br />If the Lions can handle the inept Hoosiers they will tilt with Purdue on Friday, a team they split with this year, in a second round match-up. As it stands Penn State will probably land as an 11 or 12 seed after Selection Sunday. I do not believe in RPI’s so I won’t bore you with that number. These names, all but unfamiliar around the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:place st="on"><st1:placename st="on">Penn</st1:placename> <st1:placetype st="on">State</st1:placetype></st1:place> campus until this season, have helped the basketball team reach new heights. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:+0;"></span><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal">Often over-shadowed--literally and figuratively--by Beaver Stadium and the football team, the Basketball program has reached twenty wins and a possible tournament berth with their most recent win over <st1:state st="on"><st1:place st="on">Indiana</st1:place></st1:state>. With two games remaining on their schedule against <st1:state st="on">Illinois</st1:state> and <st1:state st="on"><st1:place st="on">Iowa</st1:place></st1:state>, along with the Big Ten tournament, things are certainly looking up.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:+0;"></span>Consider that this was roughly the same team who managed a meager 15 wins in the previous season, and 11 in 2006. Flashes of brilliance were shown with upsets of <st1:placename st="on">Michigan</st1:placename> <st1:placetype st="on">State</st1:placetype>, and <st1:place st="on"><st1:state st="on">Indiana</st1:state></st1:place>--But could anyone have seen this coming? </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:+0;"></span><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal">DeChellis deserves a vast amount of credit for the turnaround of the program, but has also built the team to last. Certainly the team will miss forward Jamelle Cornley and guard <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Stanley</st1:place></st1:city> Pringle-both seniors-but three of their five starters return along with talented recruits coming in. The most valuable asset to the team, <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Battle</st1:place></st1:city>, is only a sophomore along with most of his teammates. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:+0;"></span><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal">To go from the bottom of the Big Ten conference to an NCAA Tournament team is no small feat. Critics will point out a weak conference in the Big Ten, lack of depth, and uneven play. Anyone who watches the Lions though, knows that all the talent is in place for the team to make the NCAA tournament.
